For many of us (including me), finding the perfect outfit is like finding new wings. My entire attitude gets a lift. My brain starts coming up with ideas. I can walk into any room with a new type of confidence. I can imagine myself floating about in it sprinkling magic happy pixie dust on all I encounter for the next week or so even if I didn’t actually buy the outfit!
I have wondered where this association – fashion being a form of wings – comes from. The seeds planted from our childhood activities and memories grow roots that we can’t see. They are strong, though, and they bear fruit.
When the Orville brothers created their wings, their roots are what made them look to the sky in the first place! How many before them had seen birds and dismissed those birds as simply a beautiful aside, and not a design inspiration?
I try to find my fashion wings from the other things in my life that give me wings. When Fashion and Nature Collide kind of gives away what those inspirations are, so without further ado, this month’s fashion!
Note: In case you’ve not seen these capsules before, the When Fashion and Nature Collide project is a monthly collaboration with two of my WP friends: Lisa from Lismore Paper and Darren from The Arty Plantsman. Our team also create designs for our shop at Fashionedbynature.threadless.com Artwork Copyright ©Fashioned by Nature.
The third Wednesday of each month you can see outfits styled by me, and art from Lisa and Darren, that were inspired by Darren’s flower and critter pictures, and sometimes Lisa, myself or other photographers who collaborate with the team. With the spirit of protecting nature I pull together my outfits with clothing already available in my wardrobe. When purchases are to be made, these come from vintage boutiques and thrift stores or from socio-eco-friendly brands.
Enjoy the issue! The inspiration from the butterfly is endless. And the Owl butterfly is no exception if you  appreciate its subtle beauty. Beige is not plain and dull. This color is nearly infinite in its subtlety —from tan to pale cream. It can have warm yellow undertones, pink or even gray (Greige) undertones. Layering beige tones create an elegant and soft look. For this particular piece, I went with an arrangement of browns in a lovely Joseph Ribkoff overcoat and skirt set. A wooden bag (from ERA Vintage Wear) complete the look.
The peaceful, deep tones of this graceful bird and plush flower work well with earth tones. I grounded the blue blouse centerpiece with brown and white with a blue belt for a bit of flair. A keen eye will notice that Prada kitten heels are in the birdcage… Yes, I am wired for shoe lust! More about that HERE. And don’t forget to visit Lisa’s blog for a very special shoe treat.
Black and white offset light green and pink, centered around a Marc Jacobs skirt and a waist ornament. The Longchamp purse has a classic design that never goes out of style. Is it not a funny looking orchid? I took this picture at the Botanical Garden during Darren’s last visit to Montreal. We knew right away that we would eventually use this flower for our collaborative project.

    Another Lady Slipper Orchid…

Rust into pink into greens, all distinct, yet all melded together into a single look. Pairing a dark rust leather skirt with a pinkish blouse that is draping loosely and gracefully gives me the same feeling of unification with just a little bit of fun with the green accent purse.
Thank you for letting me share my wings with you! We can never have too much inspiration in our lives, especially when we focus our minds on the things that give us real wings. Take the dive into your happier, more exciting muses and see where they take you. You will probably love the results, and even if you don’t, you will still love the outfit!

  3. fuelfortheraceblog says:September 18, 2019 at 11:18 amLovely! There is a parade of hues from fall throughout the post. Just in time for various points across the globe. Loved the wooden bag. So glad you pointed it out. One of my favorites is the shot of you leaning against the stone wall which blends the colors and shades highlighted. Subtle, but noticed. The punch of blue grabbed my eyes. Love blue!!! That orchid made me chuckle.
Its “eyebrows” stuck out nicely. Another outstanding collaboration from the trio. Love and hugs from me. -AlanLiked by 2 peopleReply
    1. 3C Style says:September 18, 2019 at 8:48 pmAlan, your comments are always so kind and beautiful. I like the aesthetic of this shot too but it means a lot to me for other reason. It was taken in the village where I grew up. I used to climb that stone wall and play around that park with my brother when I was a kid. Our house was on the other side of that wall. Ooh, that Lady Slipper orchid is surely a wild plant. It has the posture of al dente spaghetti and its “eyebrows” omg so funny. Mother Nature has a great sense of humour. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit me. I have not been blogging much lately. Big projects ahead and health wise I haven’t been at my best for the past two months. My energy level is a little low. Hopefully things will get back to normal soon. Keep well. Sending a huge hug from Montreal.Liked by 2 people

“I did not make the commitment to be the friend of the squirrels of the neighborhood but I had a crush on Titi —completely nuts! ” says Mathieu-Robert Sauvé, a friend and fellow journalist. It was he and his wife, Caroline, who saved the life of the gray squirrel featured in the October edition of When Fashion And Nature Collide —see it HERE.

Since then, I did another photo shoot with Titi and he was very collaborative.

What a pleasure for me to see this adorable ball of fur come to perch on my shoulder, a rather unusual behavior for a rodent! Titi spent several weeks with Mathieu-Robert’s family, mostly in the slipper of his youngest son, which explains why it is now a little “domesticated”.

Here is the story of Titi presented by my friend Mathieu-Robert…

My life with Titi
The baby squirrel was about five weeks old when it saw Caroline. It was between cars; abandoned and lost. It was looking for heat and nuts. She had only to reach out. It climbed. My fiancee has a tender heart. This small, bushy-tailed beast, icon of the city of Montreal, with its official name “Gray Squirrel” (Sciurus carolinensis), had it all! She put him in a box of shoes, fixed on her scooter. And vroom, vroom; house direction.
When I arrived, I saw this thing in my kitchen and thought about fleas; bites, and diseases. I sprayed him with insecticide and put a nest in the solarium. After all, we already have two cats, 17 fish, four children. Raccoons and wild beasts, outside!
It was not me who tamed him; it was him who seduced me. I called him Titi. Sweet, fun, communicative … the animal has become autumn’s attraction. He accompanied us everywhere; I repaired the bike and shaved my beard with my buddy. I thought I lost him one morning; we found him lying in a ball in a slipper.
Almost a domestic animal, he went to bed at dusk and slept until dawn. He even slept in, pointing the tip of his muzzle around 8 am, yawning and stretching all his legs. A few walnuts, a handful of sunflower seeds and, a treat of happiness, a spoonful of peanut butter. He lacked nothing. Even love. Everyone knows that the squirrel hides its reserves for the coming winter. But is this acquired or innate? And how can it know that it’s time to build a nest? All this crossed our minds when Titi started to look outside.
After a month of cocooning-all-included diet, Titi was introduced to a tree. He climbed with hesitation. Uncertain about the texture and the fact that this thing has no ceiling, he took a step and then two. Head in the air, head down, he enjoyed exploring the branches. Then, as in real families, he started to forget that we existed. He slept in a gutter (I put him back in his slipper); then he did not show up at dusk. Once, twice.
“Titi! Titi!” Left!
Today, we hardly see him anymore. Only when he needs the keys of the car or he has to go to Ikea. Such is life.

A journalist and author, Mathieu-Robert Sauvé has published 13 biographies and essays. His most recent book, La violence des agneaux, (Éditions Québec Amérique) chronicles the incredible career of scientist Richard Tremblay. For those of you who can read French, it is on sale HERE

As for me, well, I’m looking forward to seeing Titi again. Hopefully, in Spring. Fingers crossed.

BREAKING: Philippines is the real winner of national costume, says Miss Universe

by Staff Report | Entertainment

History repeats itself as Miss Universe committed another blunder. This time, on the winner of the National Costume competition.

But Steve Harvey had it right.

In a recent post on Twitter, the Miss Universe Organization confirmed that Miss Universe Philippines bet Gazini Ganados is the winner of the 2019 National Costume competition and not Shweta Sekhon of Malaysia.

The announcement came after Harvey gained so much memes online over the snafu.

During the announcement, Harvey immediately clarified that he was only reading what’s on the teleprompter.

“You keep doing this to me,” he quipped and quickly apologised afterwards.

“Steve Harvey had it right: Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados is the winner of the Miss Universe 2019 National Costume competition! Congratulations, Gazini,” Miss Universe Organization posted on Twitter.

It’s nearly impossible to go a week without talking about supermodels like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, so we think it’s fair to say that there’s a certain allure and curiosity when it comes to the lives of models. How much do they really make? What are the perks and perils of working in the industry? How often are models body-shamed? Three Pinay models tell us as it is.

When did you start modeling, and how long have you been working in this industry?

Model A: I started modeling when I was 18 years old, and I’ve been in the industry for over five years now.

Model B: As an official model, I started when I was 19. That was around two years ago.

Model C: I became a model when I was 19, which was two years ago.

What were your expectations when you entered the business? Were your expectations met or were you disappointed?CONTINUE READING BELOW ↓

Model A: Upon entering the industry, I expected all the “glitz and the glamour.” I was excited to get dolled up, play around portraying different characters, and meet inspiring people in the industry. Sure, I experienced all of that, but I quickly saw the bad side of the industry as well.

Model B: I expected a lot of events and social intereactions—and I was right. It’s been really fun, but it can get pretty exhausting as well.

Model C: I started out as a freelance model and because of that, I didn’t have many expectations or high hopes of getting anywhere. That said, it was harder for me to get gigs because I didn’t have as many connections. You really need friends in the industry so you can get noticed.YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE:

How much money do you get from a modeling gig?

Model A: It really depends on a number of factors: brand, duration, commercial vs. editorial, among other things. Magazines pay the least (around P2,000). TV commercials pay as low as P15,000 and as high as P200,000; the six-digit budget jobs are rare in Manila though. Runway jobs pay anywhere from P4,000 to P11,000. Catalog books shell out P5,000 to P15,000. But when it comes to comparing local and international rates, let’s just say we’d be lucky if we got paid a third of what models earn in other countries.

Model B: I don’t get paid as much as most people think. In fact, I’ve yet to see how much magazines pay because the payments from the recent magazines shoots I’ve done haven’t arrived yet. When I was just starting, I accepted almost all the opportunities that came because I wanted to build my portfolio. These days, I get paid P3,000 to P7,000 per shoot. But I haven’t done a commercial or booked an international gig yet, so we’ll see.

Model C: The Philippine market is nothing compared to the international market. Based on other models who’ve tried modeling abroad, our industry is very low-budget. In Hong Kong, for example, one fashion show can pay for a month’s worth of rent!CONTINUE READING BELOW ↓

Do you think you’re paid fairly?

Model A: Sometimes. There are other factors to consider, like the time and effort I have to put in. Being a model entails a lot of waiting. It eats up a lot of valuable time, and the amount you receive afterwards doesn’t always seem worth it.

Model C: Not really. A lot of clients want to make “tipid” so they cut the budget, and sometimes, my payment is below the average rate. Some people also want ex-deals, and they pay me with clothes. If it’s a close friend who is trying to start a business, it’s fine. But to be honest, this is my profession. I need the money.

Tell us about your best and worst gigs.

Model A: One of my favorite gigs was when I shot with Cosmo out of town. We spent three days in an island, but we finished the shoot earlier than expected. I was able to hang out with the whole team and we explored the city for the rest of the trip. As for the worst, I had a difficult time during a TVC shoot abroad. Imagine hearing people speaking four different languages trying to direct the talents all at the same time. It was chaos, and we were lost in translation. Working with different nationalities can be exciting but can get very confusing as well. On top of that, I was only shown in the TVC for two seconds out of a 30-second video. We started at 5:00 in the morning and ended at 7:00 a.m. the next day.CONTINUE READING BELOW ↓

Model B: My favorite gigs are the ones where I have the most freedom to move and pose. I absolutely love creative shoots, especially ones with wild themes. My worst gig was when I was just starting out. An amateur photographer contacted me and told me to shoot with around five products. The shoot was apparently for students, so I agreed to a small pay with some freebies. When I got there, they did not look like students, and they made me shoot with 40 products—not five. I still did my best to be professional about the whole situation.

Model C: My best was an out-of-town shoot! It was the perfect #workation—everything was paid for! On the other hand, my worst experience was when I did a catalogue shoot for a brand that had no intention of feeding us, despite the fact that we shot all night. YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE:

Model A: Brand sponsorships, exclusive events, and lots of travel!

Model B: Apart from all the free stuff, you learn to have more confidence in yourself. Modeling really pushes you to get out of your comfort zone, be adaptable, and work hard in whatever situation.

What’s the worst thing anyone has ever said about your body?

Model A: It’s such a Filipino thing when people greet you with, “Parang pumayat ka,” or “Tumba ka ha!” It ruins my day. Now, I know that I can’t always please everyone with my appearance. What matters more to me now is that I’m healthy and confident. Whenever I’m abroad, I would often hear, “You don’t look Filipino,” as if there’s a template of how Filipinos should look like. The worst comment I got was, “You’re Filipino? How come you don’t look like my maid?”

Model B: I’m naturally skinny, so I’ve been called “anorexic” a lot. In grade school, people called me “Olive Oil,” but comments like that don’t hurt me as much as before. I just focus on staying fit now.

Model C: I’ve been told to lose weight a number of times. I’m not at my target measurements yet, so I’m not too offended when it happens. Still, it really sucked when a designer told me I gained weight without knowing that I had been dieting for months.CONTINUE READING BELOW ↓

What are some tips you have for aspiring models?

Model A: My number one tip for aspiring young models is to finish school first! Modeling is not a long-term gig. This line of work has an expiration date. Education can empower you more than any makeup ever could.

Model B: Don’t skip jobs you’ve agreed to just because you don’t feel like it anymore. Remember, a team of people is always behind each project, and they’re probably working just as hard as you are. Be humble and ditch your ego.

Model C: It may seem easy to just “sit or walk pretty,” but this career needs a lot of patience, discipline, and a good attitude. No matter how tired you are, you have to show up.
